Middle school friend drama can make it feel like the world is going to end'constantly! But what happens when you start to believe that's really true? Eleanor's grandfather is a prepper. He doesn't know when the world will end, but he makes sure his family is prepared with a stock pile of food, water, and supplies. So when Eleanor reads a post by a Harvard scientist predicting that an asteroid will hit Earth in April, it's not so surprising that Eleanor believes it. And so do the kids at her school. They all want to prepare for TEOTWAKI (the end of the world as we know it), but the adults (other than grandpa) don't seem so convinced. The kids start an underground 'Nature Club' to start learning about the science of asteroids, what killed the dinosaurs, how to make sure you have clean water, etc. There are plenty of signs pointing to the Harvard scientist not being reliable, but Eleanor can't stop thinking it's true. It's almost like she wants the world to end. Because next year, Eleanor's best friend is going to a special school for the blind. And middle school without your best friend IS the end of the world as she knows it.
