Set in the magnificent Gulf Country of Australia in the 1970s, this is the story of a young man looking to make himself a new life. Billy arrives to find a community of very colourful characters and is soon caught up with the notorious Reillys of Wildhorse Creek. The family is unpopular with their neighbours for their dishonest practice of 'poddy dodging' (cattle theft). But impressionable Billy is quickly drawn in to the excitement and adventure of working with the tough and unpredictable cattleman Blake Reilly, son Simon and twins Cub and Jo. It is a time of change up north, and the government is forcing station owners to construct fences around their vast properties. But the Reillys have always liked to do things their own way, and before long rivalries erupt with neighbours and even police, with devastating consequences. In this harsh, unforgiving but beautiful place, only the strongest will survive. Wildhorse Creek is a novel about family tribulations and tragedies, violent weather, bitter feuds, passion, friendship and first love. There are deaths, droughts, floods and plenty of animals. But essentially it's the story of a young man from a broken home who falls into a family where he can at last belong. Though he's forced to grow up very quickly, he ultimately finds love and his rightful place in the world.
'Anything McGinnis writes begs to be read aloud around a campfire.' - Country Style 'A compelling read...The landscape flourishes briefly to create tranquil moments of intense beauty and serenity. This is the strange allure of the Gulflands and the essence of McGinnis' passionate storytelling.' - Hobart Mercury
