Gerard Bertrand, a leader in the area of organic and biodynamic wines, believes that winemaking should be harmonious with nature to make room for great wines rich with all the nuances of the terroir. But climate change, international tensions, selfserving entities, fast-paced digitization, and health crises-including the COVID-19 pandemic-are disrupting this relationship. In this open-hearted essay, Bertrand imagines solutions for a better world, starting with utopia - a symbiotic, resilient, altruistic environment for both human beings and nature.
Born in 1965 in Narbonne, Gerard Bertrand grew up in the family vineyards. A committed winemaker, deeply attached to the terroirs of the Languedoc and Roussillon, Gerard Bertrand now owns 16 wine estates (Chateaux and Domaines). Convinced that winemaking in harmony with nature is the best way to obtain great wines rich with all the nuances of their terroirs, Gerard Bertrand made the choice as early as 2002 of biodynamic viticulture which is now practiced in all his vineyards. Very active within the winemaking sector and, an enthusiastic ambassador of his region, he encourages change and signs partnership agreements with wine growers who have chosen organic viticulture. Acclaimed both for his major talents as a varietal assembler and his boldness and creativity, he and his teams work at promoting the excellence of the wines from the South of France all over the world.
