Time to Heal is the thirty year tale of a country doctor, Dr Michael Dixon, who when he started was an intrinsic part of the family and community. It follows his progress from a young doctor determined to prove himself to the older doctor developing new healing methods to fill the gaps in his medicine; gaps that required doctors to have good intuition, resourcefulness and nerves of steel. The stories, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, often terrifying and always colourful also illustrate the central importance of human relationships. But there is a sting in this tale. Today' s GPs are stressed and far from satisfied in their work. The personal doctor whom we all knew and trusted has all but vanished. This betrayal is a toxic mix of vested interests, bureaucratic ineptitude and systematic neglect. Time to Heal proposes urgent solutions that would restore the family doctor in a modern context and release his untapped potential as guardian of health and healing for the whole community.
Dr Michael Dixon has been a country GP in Devon for thirty-five years. His surgery, now called ' The Culm Valley Integrated Centre for Health' , has its own cafe, health garden and complementary therapists with the same ethos of involving patients and the community that is described in this book. In 2010 he founded the College of Medicine, which explores approaches to health and healing beyond drugs and procedures. He holds a number of academic and honorary positions including Visiting Professor at University College (London) and The University of Westminster (London). He has co-authored several books including The Human Effect (2000). He spends his free time working in the garden or fishing by his house on the river.
