Often, we are extremely cautious about how we would approach or talk to someone we know, or fear, has suicidal thoughts; we worry about saying or doing the wrong thing. But we still really want to help. The Suicide Prevention Pocketbook gives you the information and confidence you need to help friends, work colleagues and loved ones suffering from suicidal thoughts, or following a suicide attempt. It uses the innovative approach created by charity Suicide Crisis to bring understanding of what suicidal people go through - and shows how best to help. Founder Joy Hibbins helps you build on the qualities you have already, and teaches you tried-and-tested skills and techniques to help someone in a suicide crisis. The methods included could be used to help anyone that might need help: from a close relative, to another student at university, someone you know from a sports or social group, or a neighbour.
' I feel very lucky to have discovered Joy' s work. I was looking for a clinical approach where people in a suicidal crisis are supported in a truly open-hearted, humane and compassionate way, as equals, which we could learn from as professionals. Joy and the Suicide Crisis Centre[' s . . . ] methods incorporate the continuity and compassion of a good therapeutic relationship with a tenacious, proactive approach in a way that really meets people' s needs in their darkest hours' -- Dr Deborah Dover MBChB MRCPsych BSc (Hons), Deputy Medical Director, Consultant Psychiatrist and Suicide Prevention Lead, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey (London) Mental Health NHS Trust ' Joy' s work has become my go-to place for sound ideas, wisdom and practical guidance on suicide prevention. It comes from personal and crisis support experience, and it goes to the heart of good practice. Her work demonstrates how human connection, caring presence and building relationships of trust have to be at the centre of any response to crisis' -- Professor David Mosse FBA, FAcSS, Chair, Haringey Suicide Prevention Group; Core Member, The Alliance of Suicide Prevention Charities; Support After Suicide Partnership Leadership Team ' The generosity of Joy' s knowledge and wisdom is so apparent . . . (She) captures answers to all of the questions most people probably don' t even know they have, and there is an abundance of learning here that is readily and easily usable for both family, friends, colleagues or professionals working with people experiencing distress. A fantastic contribution to international suicide prevention resources' -- Sonja Eriksen, trauma and suicide prevention specialist, New Zealand
Joy Hibbins is the founder and chief executive of charity Suicide Crisis. Their crisis centre has attracted national and international interest because of its zero-suicide achievement: there has never been a suicide of a client under their care. Joy has given evidence about their work to a UK parliamentary select committee, and their work has fed into the Ministry of Health' s new suicide prevention strategy in New Zealand. Joy has personal experience of suicide crisis, which prompted her to open the centre in 2012. In 2019 she received the British Empire Medal for services to vulnerable people in the Queen' s New Year Honours List. She is regularly asked to comment on issues relating to suicide and suicide prevention in the national press, including appearances on the BBC and Sky News and articles in The Guardian and The Telegraph.
