As leader of his team in the ophthalmology department at Christchurch Hospital he won two significant awards at national and then international level. His contribution to New Zealand medicine is exceptional. Rini also immigrated to be his wife. They have two sons. Their second son Ray is exceptionally gifted and Rudy's story is closely tied to the educational attainments of Ray.
