Aged twenty-one, Emma David found herself stuck; torn between wanting to live and wanting to die. After a long history of mental health problems, an unknown diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and a subsequent suicide attempt, she was referred as an inpatient at what was to become two different psychiatric facilities. The first quickly descended into an underworld of hidden self-harm, eating disorders, drugs, and sexual predators and Emma' s problems gathered in momentum the longer she was there, combined with the backdrop of the other extremely unstable patients. The second was altogether very different; an intensive structure, as well as an insightful and challenging therapist. Could it be the place for Emma to turn her life around? Raw, honest and satirically funny at times, Storm in a Teacup lifts the lid on the otherwise private and unseen world of mental health.
Emma David was born in London in the mid-eighties and has lived there her whole life. She began writing for pleasure when she was five and went on to study English Language, Literature and Media in college. Her mental health issues began to emerge as a very young child and became very prevalent as she reached her teenage years. She temporarily found respite in drama and acting and found herself performing weekly, sailing through exam after exam at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. As her confidence began to ebb away, so did her passion for acting and then started her journey into the world of the mental health system in England. When not in therapy or hospital, she pursued her love of working with animals and now works in a veterinary clinic by day. Storm in a Teacup is based on her fifty-plus personal journals.
