An eighty-seven-year-old author recounts his lifelong spiritual quest and documents the story of how American spirituality was changed forever. A Revolution in Consciousness documents the story of the New Age movement as seen through the eyes of someone who lived through much of it. It covers the history and the backstory of many of its major events as well as the innovators, writers, and teachers who were responsible for creating it during the past hundred years. There are many firsthand encounters described including Alan Watts, Allen Ginsberg, Aldous Huxley, Rajneesh, Ram Dass, Trungpa Rinpoche and Pir Vilayat. It concludes with an incisive analysis of both the achievements as well as the failings of the New Age movement.
Mikhail Horowitz is lifelong spiritual seeker and lover of history, both of which are highlighted in The Making of a Revolution. Horowitz has seemed to have had the knack of being in the right time at the right place, especially to write this book. He was in Greenwich Village with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, in Sausalito when Alan Watts was teaching on his houseboat which he shared with the renowned artist Jean Varda. Here he also had memorable encounters with Aldous Huxley and the iconoclastic spiritual teacher Krishnamurti. He was on the hippie trail to Asia right on the heels of Ram Dass' s culture-changing visit there, and while Tony and Maureen Wheeler were having the experiences that would eventually lead to the founding of Lonely Planet. He is later back in Big Sur as Michael Murphy and Dick Price are creating Esalen, the ' home' of the human potential movement whose backstory, told here, includes many surprises, including the impact that the then still obscure spiritual teacher Rajneesh had on its founders. Early in life, Horowitz takes a vow to live by faith. Amazingly, all these years later that is still how lives. But now he has the wisdom of hindsight and can reflect back on a full life and a time of life in America when spirituality was forever changed.
