The author of Growing into Wisdom: change and transformation at midlife and Spirited Ageing: cultivation the art of renewal, has now shifted to a new genre in order to write about ageing with freshness and intimacy. She uses her own experience as a springboard to inspire others to age actively and navigate the inevitable challenges. The Pomegranate Journal becomes a subtle guidebook for anyone curious about what is to come and how best to meet it. The journal begins with the purchase of a pomegranate and inquiries about how to cut and eat this fruit. The pomegranate becomes a metaphor and connecting thread for the enigma of what lies ahead as the author enters a transition from the ages of 75 to 77, from being young-old towards becoming old-old. Gradually the pomegranate' s seeds of knowledge are released. The narrative moves through a celebration of nature connection and then into challenges such as memory loss, lifestyle changes, surgery, identity shifts, physical pain, being patronised, and the deaths of old friends. The journal charts the discovery of resources to deal with limitations: the restoration of memory, revival of old friendships, ways to create good health, recovery from setbacks, and a surprising capacity to triumph over the limitations of the body. She records how this happened through connecting with passion and creativity when invited to become part of a film series about Pakeha guilt.
