Set in 18th century England, this novel tells of the life of Thomas Puckle who at 12 years of age is left orphaned by the death of his parents. Armed with nothing but his own wits, he is forced to leave the village of Athelney to make a new life for himself. Adventures follow Thomas as he finds himself embroiled with the scurrilous Marty Dewson. Attempted murder, smuggling, highway robbery, an encounter with gypsies, all take their turn in this well-researched and fast-moving tale of love, losses and loyalty. Exciting until the end, the story portrays the lives of hard-working English folk in a society where the gentry ruled and breaches of the law by the poor were punished harshly. The story spans sixteen years of Thomas's life from 1779 until 1795. We see Thomas develop from an immature frightened young boy to a confident man, suffering adversity, but always moving onwards with honesty, good humour and determination.
P.J. Panckhurst (Pam) was born in 1941 and raised in Temuka, South Canterbury, New Zealand. Always interested in the creative arts, she has over the years pursued many interests including pottery, silversmithing, bookbinding, mosaics and story telling. This is Pam's second published book, the first being "Links in the Chain", a family historical novel about the Panckhurst family's migration to New Zealand in 1854 and their subsequent life in Canterbury and the West Coast of New Zealand. She and her husband Ron live on a two hectare lifestyle block in West Melton near Christchurch, N.Z. where they enjoy a big garden, a small vineyard, make wine and grow lavender, making their own "Liddesdale" lavender products. They have three children and five grandchildren.
