OVERCOMING BEARS is a story about the exhilaration of living in nature's remote places, the generosity and wisdom of some of North America's forgotten people, the horror of war and ultimately, how love and remorse can lead to insight. It maps a poignant tale of joy and pain, beginning in the 1880s in Denmark as the cold tightens its hold, and Eric Nielsen, a farm hand, signs on as a crew member on a herring fishing boat. Awakening after a fierce storm, Eric finds himself alone on the boat in a vast ocean. Weeks later, with food and water supplies depleted, the boat runs aground. Eric's journey takes him from Newfoundland to the Pennsylvania of the Plain People, to Northern Ontario, from there to Montana and on to the Yukon Territory.
Willow Alber was born on the West Coast of Canada, from where she sailed in a small yacht to New Zealand. Except for a few years in Fiji, she has never left. Her interests have always been in education: a founding parent of Putiki School on Waiheke Island, Supervisor of the Ahurangi Correspondence School Unit deep in the bush of the Whanganui River; Ancillary Assistant at Te Tii School north of Kerikeri. She now lives a retired lifestyle at Karamea, in the South Island, where she helps to run the community library. This is her first novel.
