When this work - one that contributes to both the history and anthropology fields - first appeared in 1982, it was hailed as a landmark study of the role of folklore in nation-building. It has since been highly influential in reshaping the analysis of Greek and European cultural dynamics. In this expanded edition, a new introduction by the author and an epilogue by Sharon Macdonald document its importance for the emergence of serious anthropological interest in European culture and society and for current debates about Greece's often contested place in the complex politics of the European Union.
"This is a useful and worthy addition to the all too meager scholarly literature on the subject." The American Historical Review"...a specially valuable contribution to the study of ethnographic theory...because it engenders discussion of the relationship of social science discourse to its subjects." Anthropology Quarterly"Ours Once More is pleasantly written, and it comes highly recommended to anyone generally interested in the nineteenth- century emergence of the Greek nation." Folklore"Herzfeld's book, as he states himself, is essentially 'an anthropology of anthropologists'; but, in my opinion, its importance is much greater than any study of a group of mere academics and intellectuals." Journal of the Anthropological Society of Oxford (JASO)"It is an important contribution to intellectual history in that it deals with the prevailing ideas at a given time, places them in wider context and shows their consequences in the formation of the Greek state." Journal of Modern Greek Studies
