Gathered from throughout Karl Stead's career, this collection is a reminder of his deft storytelling and literary power. These stories, linked by tone and feel, are clever, sensual, wry and beautifully written, with Stead's subtle sense of humour evident at every turn. The collection includes a number of new stories that haven't been previously published, as well as others that have been substantially revised and rewritten. They can be read as a meditation on the writerly life with many of the key characters being writers or involved in the world of literature and this, along with allusions to other books and poems, is a delight for keen readers. Set in locations as diverse as the South of France, Sydney, Zagreb, Auckland, San Francisco and Oxford each story is vividly drawn and stays with you long after reading. This extraordinary collection, along with Stead's appointment as Poet Laureate, confirms his position as one of our most exceptionally talented writers.
