"If Clem Popplett, youngest warden at the post in Featherstone Mews, had done as he was told and continued his patrol instead of dodging out of the rain to one of the areas in Stewarts Court, he would not have discovered his first corpse. " When newlyweds Agnes and Andrew Kinghof are present for the discovery of an over-ripe corpse in the air-raid shelter of their apartment building, the two set to work on putting their amateur detective skills to work (much to the chagrin of Andrew' s uncle at Scotland Yard). The dead man' s sister, a neighbour, is nearly frightened to death by the appearance of a grinning pig' s head outside her window, and she claims to be threatened by someone calling himself "The Pig". The newlyweds deduce that it must be someone who lives in the same apartment building, which houses, amongst others; a medical student, a civil servant with fascist sympathies, and a French widow. Set during the Second World War, this deceptively light-hearted page-turner is one of two detective novels jointly written with the author' s first husband and journalist, Neil Stewart, under the joint pseudonym ' Nap Lombard' .
Nap Lombard was the penname of Pamela Hansford Johnson and Neil Stewart. Johnson was a playwright and author, whose debut, This Bed Thy Centre (1935), was a controversial success about a young couple' s sexual frustration as the result of a long engagement. Stewart was an Australian journalist and author who served in the British Army during the Second World War. Together they co-wrote two light-hearted classic mysteries - Tidy Death (1940) and Murder' s a Swine (1943).
