Inspiration for Miranda Bay comes from a collection of diaries and old letters, personal and shared experiences of family, workmates and friends: from managing a tourist resort in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand; from working in psychiatric hospitals, travelling extensively, sailing internationally, and from living and raising a family in Kenya. The main character, Miranda, is raucous, unpredictable, self-focused, an exaggerated version of people close to the author, and within Miranda is a desperate need for fairness, and to be loved.
