In 2021, as the Jeep celebrates its 80th anniversary, there is no doubt that itis one of the world' s most famous automobiles. The utility 4x4 machine was designed to help win a war - something that it did with aplomb - and a legend was born, spawning both evolved models that remain in production to this day and numerous imitators around the globe. The Jeep also led to the establishment of four-wheeling as a form of recreation, something else that has spread around the globe. The idea of preserving wartime Jeeps as classic vehicles with a tangible link to World War Two became established during the 1970s and, over 50 years, has become ever more popular and led to the formation of organizations such as the MVPA. This book looks at the history of military Jeeps made by Willys and Ford in the US, as well as the likes of Hotchkiss and NEKAF in Europe. Illustrated with over 220 photographs, this book provides an up-to-date view of Jeeps within the military vehicle preservation scene. AUTHOR: John Carroll is an esteemed motoring journalist and photographer. He is the editor of 4x4 magazine and contributes to Land Rover World and Off Road and 4 Wheel Drive, as well as having several books under his belt.
John Carroll has been a full-time motoring journalist since 1989 and has worked on numerous magazines in that time, including spells editing Windscreen (the magazine of the Military Vehicle Trust) and Classic Military Vehicle magazines. He was also the editor of Classic Land Rover Magazine for many years. He is a widely published author with more than 20 automotive books to his credit. He bought his second Land Rover, a 1957 Series One 88in that required a full rebuild, for 300 in 1989 and still has it. It has now been joined by a 1953 80in, which also cost 300 and needed a full rebuild. John says he cannot put a price on the fun and numerous experiences that these two old Land Rovers have brought him.
