This 350 page historical novel details the life and experiences of a family in Gravesend, England in the 1840's. It is a blend of fact and fiction and covers their sea journey to Australia and the New South Wales gold-fields and their subsequent arrival in New Zealand in 1857 as early colonial pioneers. With accompanying photographs it is a fascinating read, crammed with tales and events based on actual occurrences. It contains early history of Gravesend, Tasmania, Christchurch, Woodend and Kaiapoi and the West Coast.
P.J. Panckhurst (Pam) was born in 1941 and raised in Temuka, South Canterbury, New Zealand. Always interested in the creative arts, she has over the years pursued many interests including pottery, silversmithing, bookbinding, mosaics and story telling. This is Pam's first venture into writing but she has since published a novel entitled 'The Past is Ever Present'. Set in the late 18th century, it is an adventurous story of a young boy orphaned at the age of 12 and his progression through into adulthood. She and her husband Ron live on a two hectare lifestyle property in West Melton near Christchurch, N.Z. where they enjoy a big garden, a small vineyard, make wine and grow lavender, making their own "Liddesdale" lavender products. They have three children and five grandchildren.
