See the images and read the stories behind the creative process of one of America' s most respected landscape photographers, William Neill. For more than two decades, William Neill has been offering his thoughts and insights about photography and the beauty of nature in essays that cover the techniques, business, and spirit of his photographic life. Curated and collected here for the first time, these essays are both pragmatic and profound, offering readers an intimate look behind the scenes at Neill' s creative process behind individual photographs as well as a discussion of the larger and more foundational topics that are key to his philosophy and approach to work. Drawing from the tradition of behind-the-scenes books like Ansel Adams' Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs and Galen Rowell' s Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape, Light on the Landscape covers in detail the core photographic fundamentals such as light, composition, camera angle, and exposure choices, but it also deftly considers those subjects that are less frequently examined: portfolio development, marketing, printmaking, nature stewardship, inspiration, preparation, self-improvement, and more. The result is a profound and wide-ranging exploration of that magical convergence of light, land, and camera. Filled with beautiful and inspiring photographs, Light on the Landscape is also full of the kind of wisdom that only comes from a deeply thoughtful photographer who has spent a lifetime communicating with a camera. Incorporating the lessons within the book, you too can learn to achieve not only technically excellent and beautiful images, but photographs that truly rise above your best and reveal your deeply personal and creative perspective--your vision, your voice.
"A quality I always admire in William Neill' s work is the consistent sense of calmness, reverence, and quiet dignity expressed in both his photographs and his words. Like Neill' s other books, Light on the Landscape is more than just a collection of photographs and writings, it is also a refuge for the mind and heart, a way to be transported for a time into realms of beauty and wisdom beyond the mundane. " --Guy Tal "When I first joined the editorial staff at Outdoor Photographer, one artist immediately resonated with me and stood out among the many celebrated contributors whose work we showcase. More than twenty years later, I' m still inspired by William Neill and his thoughtful, meditative approach to photography. His images are bold yet elegant, strong but still strangely delicate, conveying his keen and distinctive sense of balance in photographic composition. " --Wes Pitts, Editorial Director, Outdoor Photographer Magazine "I have looked to the work of William Neill for inspiration countless times over the last few years. As a younger, newer photographer, I admire William and those in his ranks that have paved the way for so many of us today, showing us their creative and deeply personal perspectives of the world that we live in, while gracefully portraying its beauty in each of their own unique styles. In his latest book, Light on the Landscape, we get to see the products of the deep love and admiration that William holds for nature. Both in moving photographs and elegant writing, William expresses how the wilderness can uplift our spirits and how important it is that we preserve and protect these places for now and generations to come. In each of the articles he also shares the priceless and timeless wisdom he has gained from decades of personal experience of how one can improve their photography and make their images more meaningful. My own appreciation and love for nature has now grown even more by studying this incredible work of art, and I am sure I have become a better photographer because of it. " --Eric Bennett "I have very few photographic heroes. Very few photographers who' s work continually inspires me. Very few photographers who somehow combine their extraordinary images with an extraordinary life--a life of joy, beauty, insight, and compassion. It' s a very short list. Want to know who' s right at the top? William Neill. His new book is a masterpiece. Everyone should read his words and feast on his images!" --Dewitt Jones "It is clear that William, the landscape, and his images are all part of one system. His engagement with the various elements of our natural world display a humility and gentle insight into the nature of matter. More than that, however, these pages represent a a beacon of hope for landscape photography and the larger society as a whole. Through passion, wonder, fascination, and excitement for the little details in life, we can appreciate our own unique perspectives, and grow, harmoniously and without judgement. " --Alister Benn "A lifetime of experience in landscape and nature photography all rolled up into an amazingly beautiful package filled with incredible photographs, stories, and insightful takeaways--a must read for anyone serious about landscape photography. " --Matt Payne "A brief tour through the digital volume of Light on the Landscape reveals it is an elegantly designed book, filled with stunning images, as well as informative and inspiring writing. " --John Sexton
