Asians make up the largest and most dispersed people of the world, and Christians make up a sizable proportion of this demographic. Asian Christians are more likely to emigrate, and many have continued to embrace Christian faith at their diasporic places of settlement. They are quick to establish distinctively Asian churches all over the world and infuse diversity, revival, and missionary consciousness into their adopted communities. They preserve the ties and cultures of their ancestral homelands while assimilating and adapting into the new setting. They have become a recognizable force in the transformation and advancement of Christianity itself at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The dozen essays in this volume are written by leading scholars of Asian backgrounds situated in various diasporic locations. The authors trace the contours of their dispersion and highlight diverse missiological themes, including the scattering (diaspora) and the gathering (ekklesia) of Asian Christians around the world. This volume traces the origins and destinations of major Asian migration and diaspora communities from a variety of perspectives and geographical locations. It is pan-Asian in scope and multidisciplinary in nature. It also provides the latest data and infographics on Asian diasporas worldwide.
"This remarkable collection of essays is not only a testimony to the vibrancy of Asian theological reflection, but also to the global impact of the Asian diaspora, which is having a far-reaching and formative impact on the very nature of global Christianity. " --Timothy C. Tennent, Asbury Theological Seminary"Asians are moving, putting down new roots, encountering the gospel, growing as disciples, planting immigrant churches, inventing new ministries, and reaching back to their homelands and to new fields. We cannot afford to be ignorant about Asian diaspora Christians. " --Miriam Adeney, Seattle Pacific University"In world Christianity studies, Christianity' s diffusion is often thought of as a polycentric, diasporic process, each scattered community interlinked with others in a mutually transformative encounter. In diaspora studies, Asia' s role in Christianity' s global spread seems understudied. Journeys of Asian Diaspora represents a significant leap forward. A timely resource, it will prove helpful as we scramble to catch up with the latest chapters of the Christian travel story. " --Richard Fox Young, Princeton Theological Seminary"By many accounts, the twenty-first century is expected to be the Asian century! What then might be the implications for understanding Asian religiosity in general and Asian Christianity more specifically in the global context? Sam George and his colleagues provide multiple windows anticipating the most important and burgeoning questions. " --Amos Yong, Fuller Theological Seminary
