Nestled under Whangarei's Western Hills, bordered by a trickling stream, the leafy park at the end of Selwyn Avenue revealed almost no sign of its origins until the early 21st century. At the little cemetery, in use from around 1852 to 1940, lie many of Whangarei's earliest European residents. Originally known as Waiarohia or Rust Lane, the cemetery was later officially named Mission Ground. All through the years since closure, descendants had yearned for the names of their forebears to be inscribed on a memorial. Finally, a cairn bearing sixty-six names was unveiled in 2010 and work began on compiling the first volume of the settlers' stories. In Memoriam ' Mission Ground Cemetery 1840-2010 was published in 2011. By 2017 a total of a hundred and sixty-seven names were inscribed on the cairn. Two additional volumes tell their stories. The In Memoriam ' Mission Ground Cemetery series records the controversial history of the site and draws a picture of the life and times of Whangarei's earliest European settlers.
