In Confessions of a VAT Inspector, Dawn Fallon takes the reader on an entertaining journey of her work experience in the Civil Service where she was commandeered as a VAT Control Officer by HM Customs & Excise in 1988 - a job she did not choose or want. However, she discovers that being a VAT Inspector is a job like no other, revealing a unique insight into business people and places. In the book - the first to be written about work as a VAT Inspector - Dawn transports the reader to a different era giving rare insights into historical facts and quirks of the British Civil Service during the 80s and 90s, documenting the impact the Tory government had on the Civil Service, including unique pictures from the author' s personal correspondence. A humorous yet factual account, the book details how VAT visits were undertaken and it also records her positive experience working as a woman in the Civil Service, embellished by selective staff appraisals reports. Dawn tells stories of some of her VAT visits to various traders including a plumber, newsagent, second hand shop, glazier, milkman, butcher, farmer, pyramid seller, Irish pub, removal firm, and a large German retailer, detailing the interesting characters she met and the unforgettable impact they had on her.
