Um 1890 ging mit der Entwicklung von Alpinismus und Tourismus der Bau von Unterkunften fur die Liebhaber der Bergwelten Sudtirols und seiner Nachbarregionen einher. In entlegenen Hochgebirgslandschaften entstanden Berghotels, die sich in den regionalen Kontext einfugten, zugleich aber auch Symbole politischer und wirtschaftlicher Raumbeanspruchung ihrer Erbauer darstellten. Die Architekturproduktion der Berghotels erfolgte auf der Basis innovativer Entwurfsmethoden in Serie oder mit einem Modulprogramm. Die Autorin untersucht die Genese des Bautyps vor dem Hintergrund des internationalen Hotelbaus: von der Entwurfspraxis uber die kunstlerische Interpretation von Leitideen bis zur Innenraumgestaltung - ausgehend von der Pramisse, dass das Hotel "eine Synthese von Klinik, Wagons-Lits und Maschine" ist (J. A. Lux).
