The Art of Goalkicking is the must-have AFL player' s guide to goalkicking technique and skill. One area of Australian football play that seems to fail consistently is the art of goalkicking. No matter how many shots at goal a team may have, you can be sure that one question will be constantly asked, at any game, at any ground: How is it that professional, highly skilled AFL players keep missing simple shots at goal? The truth is that goalkicking accuracy at the highest professional level has not improved for most of the last decade. In this guide, David Wheadon, one of Australian football' s most respected skills coaches and analysts, covers all aspects of the art of goalkicking and draws on comprehensive statistics compiled through several seasons to explain how and why goalkicking accuracy can be improved. Detailed chapters range from game plans for greater goalkicking success to ways to teach players to improve in all methods of goal shooting. Wheadon even examines the remarkable success of the set-shot snap, the kick around the body made famous by Geelong star Steve Johnson. The Art of Goalkicking is the bible for coaches and players, as they strive to conquer this oft-ignored skill.
David Wheadon is one of Australian football' s most innovative thinkers. He has filled a number of assistant coaching roles throughout his career, including forward line, defence, goalkicking, opposition analysis, skills and ruck. Over his AFL coaching career, he has worked for and with 11 coaches, who have won 17 premierships between them, and has been on the coaching staff of three AFL premiership teams: Essendon in 1993, and Geelong in 2007 and 2009. His previous books are Drills and Skills in Australian Rules football (1989, 2010), Tactics in Modern Football (1991), Football Skills: How to play the Game (1997), and The Art of Coaching (2014). He conducts the Next Coach program under the auspices of the AFL Coaches Association and the AFL Players Association.
