The American Revolutionary War was a conflict that Britain did not want, and for which it was not prepared. The British Army in America at the end of 1774 was only 3,000 strong, with a further 6,000 to arrive by the time that the conflict started in the spring of 1775. Because of individual egos, other strategic priorities, and the number of ships available, that support was not always at the level the British public expected.
