As beautifully crafted as anything Henrik Ibsen ever wrote, A DOLL’S HOUSE examines what lies behind the facade of 19th century life, uncovering injustice and hypocrisy at every turn. The plot revolves round Nora Helmer who is blackmailed after illegally borrowing money to save the life of Torvald, her banker husband, when he was ill. Her plight still resonates for the modern reader, as do the issues she faces up to. Written in 1879, A DOLL’S HOUSE has been called the first truly feminist play. A scathing critique of the traditional roles of men and women in the nineteenth century marriage, it caused scandal throughout Europe at a time when marriage was regarded as the most sacred of society’s institutions. In Britian this uproar led to it being banned.
