Caroline and her husband, Harry, teamed up with Ernest Favenc on Thursday Island in 1883 with the purpose of investigating the lands of the Gulf and Northern Territory for pastoral purposes. She became the only female in male company as the expedition progressed, and demonstrated her constitution was every bit as tough as theirs. Peter Monteath, lecturer in History at Flinders University, has written an introduction in which he states: 'The diary...offers compelling insights into the travails on nineteenth century land exploration: the harshness of the northern climate, the permanent shortage of food...the exhaustion of constant travel.'
