Manufacturing for civilians across the globe nearly stopped at the outset of World War II, as outfitting troops took precedence over nonmilitary production. Raw materials were prioritized for the armed forces and the majority of non-military factories were shifted to war work, resulting in shortages and rationing of consumer products. Nan Elizabeth Turner is a fashion and academic professional with a strong interest in the history of World War II. Her love of creativity, sewing and fashion propelled her into a career as a fashion designer in New York, Paris and San Francisco before returning to her alma mater, the University of California, Davis, to teach fashion-related courses.
