"Fascinating, highly informative, and unbearably moving. . . beautifully written and meticulously researched. " Combining military and social history and personal memoir, this account explores the lifelong impact of Bomber Command operations upon 19-year-old RAF wireless operator Jack Clyde and the members of the Pennicott crew. Illustrated with original photographs, Above Us The Stars provides a glimpse into the everyday life of a Halifax bomber crew, and the horrors faced both by the airmen and German civilians "on the ground". The book draws upon interviews with citizens of Jack' s home town of Seaham Harbour, and with the last surviving member of his crew. Their accounts are interwoven with a detailed analysis of contemporaneous historical sources, and of 10 Squadron' s operations from the commencement of the Battle of the Ruhr in the summer of 1943, until the end of the war.
