Shadows in the Night is set in the early 1800s when the role of upper class young women was clearly defined, and spirited young women, such as Julia Farraday, found these rules constrictive. Julia leaves her position at the Court of George 111, to live with her aging relative, Great Uncle Thomas Farraday, on the Sussex Coast. Smuggling was a hugely profitable business and smugglers, who will not hesitate to kill, still operated in the village of Winchelsea. Julia is caught up in a labyrinth of deception and revelations as she learns the truth about those she trusted and those she shouldn't have. Kipling's poem, A Smuggler's Song, advises "Watch the wall my darling while the gentlemen go by". Julia must heed this for any informant to the hard pressed Excise Service would likely meet with a swift death.
