Sam, the narrator, is a retired journalist and friend of James Tinley. James is a former right-wing Cabinet Minister, reserved, patrician, unforgiving. Owen Moody is young and brilliant and soon to be dead. It is Wellington, 1935. The Great Depression is almost over and Labour is set to seize victory in the coming election. James decides to run for office again and is assured of the National candidacy when his opponent shoots Moody. The trial causes a political sensation and exposes the cracks in the carefully guarded facade of this political circle. For James the approaching elections also bring him closer to the slow and dramatic collapse of his world. On the night, James inevitably loses his seat to Labour and the terrible dark secret in his life surfaces. He's been caught, compromised and blackmailed. Only at the brink is it revealed what an appalling price he has paid for the great lie in his life. Maurice Gee's wonderful new novel is as good as anything he has ever done. Multi-layered, beautifully constructed, constantly surprising the reader, it combines good old-fashioned drama with a master writer's exquisite story-telling.
