Pinocchio's creator and father Geppetto loves him dearly and although Pinocchio loves him just as much, the wayward puppet finds it almost impossible to be the good, loving son he wishes to be. More than anything Pinocchio longs to be a real boy and the Blue Fairy promices to grant his wish if he can prove he is brave, loyal and honest. But Pinocchio loves having fun and he is easily tempted into making the wrong choices. Before long he is drawn into a series of magcial and often frightening adventures - will he ever learn the difference between good and bad? Carlo Collodi's classic story in the waywood puppet Pinocchio is brought to life by Roberto Innicenti's stunning illustrations.
"Roberto Innocenti's illustrations are magnificent" - Scotsman. "He is simply one of the best children's illustrators working anywhere" - New York Times Book Review.
Carlo Lorenzini was born in Florence in 1826, the eldest son of a cook and a servant, and was brought up in the hillside village of Collodi. He began his writing career as a journalist, writing under the pseudonym Carlo Collodi. In 1875 he began writing for children, adapting traditional tales and creating his own stories. When the first chapter of Pinocchio appeared in an Italian newspaper in July 1881 it was an immediate success. Carlo Collodi died in Florence in 1890. Roberto Innocenti was born in 1940 in a small town near Florence. Never having attended art school, he went to Rome to work in an animation studio. Returning to Florence, he began designing books and illustrating film and theatre posters. The Jonathan Cape titles he has illustrated include The Nutcracker by E.T.A. Hoffman and Rose Blanche by Ian McEwan. He lives in Florence with his wife and daughter.
