The alpine zone is usually defined as the area on a mountain between the upper limit of tree growth, the treeline, and where permanent snow begins. New Zealand's alpine land includes parts of the Southern Alps in the South Island, and the central North Island. All of the images in this book were taken in the South Island, mostly between 1300-1600mts. Some of New Zealand's alpine flora are small and elusive, making them difficult to find. It takes time and commitment, searching the mountains in difficult terrain and all weather conditions, hoping to find a plant in perfect condition to photograph. Not all alpine plants flower every year, one never knows what each season will reveal until you venture out to look.
