A straight, white male in New Zealand is not what it used to be and no-one knows this more than Martin King, the frustrated writer and assistant librarian at the North Shag Rock Public Library. Lorded over by a vicious librarian, Erica Polwart, tormented by wheelchair-bound Nell and continually wrong-footed by the ethnically mysterious Tad, Martin is as unwanted as the statue of pioneer Sir Edward Lazenby outside the library doors. When the statue is to be moved for political reasons, Martin sees the opportunity to shine at the rededication ceremony. But is being a pale, entitled male enough anymore? Or has he just chanced on the one sure way to get ahead in modern New Zealand? Man Down is an hilarious satire on our identity-obsessed times.
