Little Fur is a creature from another age, half elf and half troll. She lives in a secret wilderness, hidden within an ancient city, healing and caring for the little creatures who come there, and tending her beloved magical trees, the Old Ones. But when the Troll king begins to plot against the earth spirit. which binds and nourishes all living things, Little Fur sets off on a dangerous quest to the troll city of Underth. The questers must gather information for the Sett Owl about the troll king's plans, but if they are discovered or caught, they will almost certainly die. Her companions are the faithful cat Ginger, a reluctant and bad-tempered rat who once dwelt in Underth, and a fox called Sorrow, who has suffered so deeply that he longs for death. Only the fox's indomitable spirit binds him to life. He agrees to take part in the quest because the journey they must make is so filled with peril that he is sure to meet his end.
