Sir James Knowles (1831-1908) was an architect and editor who was born in London. He became friends with the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, whose own ' Idylls of the King' inspired Sir James to put this collection of stories together. Sir James later designed a house for Lord Tennyson as well as churches in Clapham in south London and the garden in Leicester Square. He co-founded the Metaphysical Society with Lord Tennyson in 1860, the members of which included many notable figures of Victorian society. He married twice and is buried in Brighton.
