She started as a theater set-designer, creating scenery for plays. After that, she worked for several years in Melnitsa, one of the biggest animation studios in Russia. Nowadays, Zhenya is an illustrator of children' s books who works mostly for Russian children' s publishers, along with creating individual illustrations. She currently lives and works in St. Petersburg, Russia.
