WASHINGTON, DC, October 15 2021 -- What if the President found out the world was going to be hit by a cataclysmic event, but chose to keep it secret so he could save American lives at the expense of the rest of the world? That's the premise of a spine-chilling new novel set on the above date, The Exodus File by Reg Puckey, which explores the ethics of whether governments should inform the public of impending catastrophes, or whether public order is better served by staying silent and planning behind the scenes. A scientist at the Mt Palomar Observatory discovers that an asteroid half the size of the moon and made of magnetite is due to pass close enough to earth to rock the planet's iron core and cause a polar shift that sets the North Pole in the middle of Kansas. The prospect of vast ice sheets covering much of North America, making the USA uninhabitable, looms large. The Exodus File looks at the problem from diverse angles. On the one hand, it is argued that the public have a right to plan for a catastrophe four years away and deserve to know now. On the other hand, it's argued that telling the public, without offering a solution, would result in instant anarchy and the collapse of governments worldwide, followed by a quick descent into survival of the fittest. In the end, the President chooses to keep the information hidden on pain of death - and enforces that silence ruthlessly - figuring that his responsibility is first and foremost to save Americans by maintaining stable government and planning secretly for a mass exodus from the affected regions, "and to hell with the rest of the world".
