Throughout its 93-year existence, Coolangatta - which stood at 464 Remuera Road from 1913 to 2006 - was unquestionably Auckland's most admired residence. To many, it was known as 'The Lotto House', meaning that if they were lucky enough to win Lotto, they would buy it. When Coolangatta was destroyed without warning in 2006, lawyer and author Peter Macky became determined to find out exactly how and why such a tragedy could have occurred. Who was responsible? Was it the owners or a purchaser from them? What role did the Auckland City Council play? Following an exhaustive investigation spanning three years, Macky has not only answered these questions, but he has also unearthed a wealth of information on Auckland's heritage, its Arts and Crafts architects and early architectural history. Most importantly, however, the book is an appeal for a greater appreciation of our heritage and its protection; and for improvements to Auckland city's contemporary architecture and urban design.
Peter Macky was educated in Auckland and New York and is a member of the Bar Associations of New Zealand and New York State. He is a consultant partner in the law firm Macky Roberton, with a lifelong interest in urban design, history and heritage, having been a life member of the Historic Places Trust for over 30 years. Macky is a director of Civic Trust Auckland, a non-profit, public interest group, which has as its aim the preservation of heritage, in all its forms. His other great interest is rugby league, with Macky having chaired the Auckland Warriors, the Auckland Rugby League and the Ponsonby Rugby League Club for many years. His last book was Wartime Correspondence, a collection of letters sent during the early years of the Second World War, which was well received. His current project is the restoration of a nineteenth-century train station built for Kaiser Wilhelm II in Brandenburg, Germany. He lives in Auckland and Berlin.
