Come Rain, Come Shine! is set in Lyttleton in the mid thirties and forties. The likeable main character, Ralph, spends every penny he has on tickets to the local picture theatre. When High School begins and he finds a mentor in his English teacher, his fascination with radio plays, films and theatre increases. He and a friend write a play and it is accepted for broadcast by the local radio station, with the two boys reading all parts. War threatens and becomes a reality. In the community of Lyttleton, young men's lives are damaged and some are lost. The story, written by a word-craftsman, demonstrates the mores and niceties of New Zealand society of that era.
