A peek into the secret, silent world of rivers and lakes and an introduction to the incredible variety of freshwater fish that inhabit them. With a palpable passion for his subject matter, Tom Fort explores the lives of charismatic freshwater fishes. Marvel at the incredible struggle of the Atlantic salmon and the cycle that takes it from birth in a tiny stream, out to sea and far away to the north, then back to its birth river to breed and die. Come to know less familiar creatures: the secretive eel, with a life story even more extraordinary than that of the salmon; the pike, lean and camouflaged predator of lakes and rivers; the carp, huge, stately and cunning, begetter of obsessions; the exquisite spotted brown trout and its silver cousin, the grayling. Freshwater fish are not merely extraordinary in their own right, but they are a crucial indicator of the wellbeing of our rivers and lakes, on which so much of natural environment depends.
Tom Fort has spent most of his working life with BBC Radio News. His interests, apart from lawns, include fishing and cricket, and he is the fishing correspondent for the Financial Times. Also the author of ' The Far From Compleat Angler' , Tom Fort now lives in Oxfordshire.
