New edition of Delany' s classic pre U. S. Civil war slavery tale which follows an escaped slave who tries to ignite insurrection against the de-humanizing institutions of depravation. New edition with a new introduction. Delany' s tale of Blake, an escaped slave in the era before the US Civil War brings the harrowing detail of life under slavery and offers a call to action for resistance. Casting beyond the misery of slavery Delany' s novel, located in the Southern United States and Cuba, demonstrates that alternatives are possible if only widespread insurrection could be ignited. AUTHOR: Martin R. Delany (1812 85), abolitionist and first Black field officer in the U. S. Army, produced a collection of works that resonate still with advocates for civil rights and social justice. Writing the US Civil War he is often regarded as the father of Black Nationalism.
