`The Flatty' begins this book and introduces 'Bitty'. The stories have the themes of the River and the evolving life of Bitty running so closely the book reads like a small novel. Jean says ' 'I left the river when I was a very young child but the River has never left me. I frequently go back to be by its side.' 'Bitty' is the main character and narrator of all the stories. She is five when the book starts in 1937 and 19 when it finishes in 1950. Historical events such as the Second World war and the Poliomyelitis Epidemic are woven in as naturally as the dialogue and the characters. 'Bitty' could have been any girl of the time; her family ' any family. This was a time of immense hardships, yet it was also a romantic period and a time of simplicity, courage and fun. Jean says ' 'I wanted to bring history alive through these characters and this place.' ' Jean Louise Allen Oct 2008
Jean has been writing for most of her life. She has had a children's non-fiction reader published which was used in New Zealand and some Australian schools, and has written non-fiction for magazines. She has also had stories accepted by Radio New Zealand and is working on two other books of fiction also set in the Kaipara and Northern Wairoa River areas of New Zealand. Jean says - ' I left the river when I was a very young child but the River has never left me. I frequently go back to be by its side.'
