John Fante's 1930s classic Ask the Dust has been made into a feature film by Tom Cruise's production company. The film stars Colin Farrell, and Salma Hayek. The US release of the movie of has been confirmed for 17 March 2006. Australian release will follow, and as a result Text is re-issuing John Fante's brilliant novel in its original edition. The movie of Ask the Dust is directed by Robert Towne, who gained legendary status as the writer of the 1970s thriller Chinatown. Towne won an Oscar for his screenplay of Chinatown, which was directed by Roman Polanski and starred Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. Chinatown is regarded in movie circles as being one of the best movie ever made about Los Angeles. Towne has said that Ask The Dust is the best book ever written about Hollywood.
JOHN FANTE was born in 1909 to poor Italian-American parents in Colorado. Following a hard and religious upbringing, he ventured west in the 1930s to become a writer. After publishing four superb but commercially disappointing novels, he became a successful screen writer, but never forgave himself for leaving his true calling. He died in 1980.
