So, when selected as one of the pilot counties for The British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme in 1997, it was suspected that this reputation would ensure Kent would reveal a wealth of discoveries. It has not disappointed, with thousands of finds being reported to the successive Finds Liaison Officers.Kent has so far produced everything from the headline-grabbing Bronze Age gold Ringlemere cup, a Roman Republican helmet from Bridge and occasional Anglo-Saxon garnet-inlaid silver brooches, to the anonymous scattering of pot sherds, isolated lost keys and swathes of often indecipherable coins. Each one helps us fit together a bigger, clearer picture of Kent's history, its people and relationship with the wider world.
